Warming water temperatures in spring sends monster walleye in search of most anything that comes within striking distance. Whether it's a lure, a minnow, an imitation crankbait or night crawler on a worm harness.

This is a time that sportsmen should not overlook because walleye turn on right after they spawn, which is typically mid April to May, when it can truly become a feeding frenzy for big walleye on the Columbia River.

In order to be successful it is necessary to understand some basic patterns of walleye at various times of the year. We also target Columbia River bass.

In the northern states, walleye can spawn anywhere from the middle of April to the middle of May. This timetable is influenced by how early we have warm weather in the spring. Interest in sport fishing for Walleye on the Columbia River has been growing in popularity in recent years.

Jack Glass with Columbia River Walleye

River walleye, unlike lake walleye, have to fight current all of their lives. Therefore, the walleye in rivers like the Columbia have adapted to areas that offer current breaks so they are not continuously fighting the current. These current breaks are anything that diverts the current and allows slack water.

Slack water areas are found below the dams where an eddy is formed by the water being drawn over the dam and rushing downstream. Team Hook-up knows these, and other areas well and can find you some of the hottest action ever for these fine eating fish. Walleye are prized for their excellent table quality and fine textured meat.

The Columbia River below Bonneville Dam contains a healthy population of walleye similar to the one Jack is holding in this photo. The Columbia contains numerous fish reaching 12-pounds or more. Many angler's strongly believe the next Oregon or Washington state record walleye will come from the Columbia River. You might just be the one to land it while fishing with Jack Glass, one of northwest's the top guides for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and walleye.
