| The Sandy and Columbia rivers
both provide ample opportunities for catching hatchery winter steelhead.
Both rivers have had strong returns in recent years.

Hatchery steelhead weigh 8 to 10 pounds on average with
some reaching 15 pounds. Wild steelhead have been observed up to 21 pounds
on the Sandy. All non fin-clipped steelhead must be released unharmed. Returns of adipose fin-clipped
wild broodstock fish are showing in stronger numbers from successful
spawning programs now in place.
These steelhead are full of spunk and put up an impressive
battle. Many of the brood-stock fish weigh 12 to 15 pounds each with some
even larger.
